Orthotics

  • Orthotics are custom casted insoles prescribed for a specific foot type that fit into shoes to improve mechanics and comfort.
  • Orthotics are used to treat a variety of orthopaedic conditions including heel pain, knee pain, leg length discrepancies and low back pain; and for many forms of arthritis and diabetes.
  • Orthotics can be made from soft or rigid materials depending on a person’s foot type and the nature of the injury.
  • Orthotic assessment and fitting at Altum Health is done by a qualified chiropodist who will also take specific measurements and a plaster casting of the foot to ensure a custom fabrication of the orthotic.
  • Orthotic assessment, fitting and production of the device are charged on a fee-for-service basis.
  • In addition, clients requiring chiropody services can also access these at Altum Health.

Bracing

  • Bracing is a clinical field involving the application of external braces to existing limbs from head to toe. Some examples are knee braces for sports and work injuries, ankle/foot braces for stroke or cerebral palsy, and back braces for back injuries or curvatures of the spine.
  • A brace may be custom fitted or pre-sized off-the-shelf depending on the client’s needs.
  • For custom bracing, a Certified Orthotist (designation C.O.(c)) is an allied health care professional that is specifically trained in this field. An individual needing a brace can be referred to an orthotist by a family doctor or specialist. The orthotist will complete a full assessment of the affected area. A plaster impression or measurement of the limb segment will be taken. Once all the relevant information is compiled, the brace will be fabricated and custom fitted.
  • Bracing assessment, fitting and follow up are charged on a fee-for-service basis.
